TVLA Closed on Friday, August 27th

Dear Students, Tutors and Friends,

Just a quick note to let you know that TVLA will be closed on Friday August 27th (this week). This isn’t because of problems, thank goodness! We have been extremely quiet the last couple of Fridays, and we decided to allow staff to take a vacation day and save some money on electricity, etc. at the same time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us here at 749-0777.

Our website(www.tvla.ca) is always open.

Best wishes,

Teresa Kerr

TVLA: Adult Literacy and Learning in the Peterborough Region

Featured

The Trent Valley Literacy Association (TVLA) helps adults in Peterborough city and county acquire the literacy, numeracy, and computer skills they need to live and work successfully in the community. We’re a registered charity: a proud member of the Peterborough United Way.

Trent Valley Literacy Association Philosophy and Programs

As a community-based nonprofit organization, TVLA helps adults build essential literacy skills by bringing together learners, volunteers and staff to explore skills that will meet learners’ personal and work-related needs. We begin by assessing a student’s literacy level and other basic skills. Once we understand the learner’s situation, we help him or her set realistic goals that meet the his or her needs and objectives.

After setting goals, students begin of our programs:

We provide the essential skills students need to successfully live and work in the community. In addition, TVLA works with community organizations such as LOCS, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Sir Sandford Fleming College to provide access to a wide ranging of learning opportunities, from other essential skills classes to post-secondary programs.

Volunteering with TVLA

Trent Valley Literacy Association relies on volunteer tutors to provide one to one tutoring and help in the classroom. We teach every volunteer to help through a tutor training program that recognizes reading as a process — not a single activity. The training program covers a broad range of relevant topics including learning styles, learning disabilities, and social issues that contribute to literacy problems in our community.
